Batman, one of the most popular Superhero to ever walk in the fictional world. In 1997 the fourth installment of the Batman Franchise was realised and that treat just turned twenty years old. Batman and Robin, now something that could be considered a cult classic, was not recepted very well with the critics. Although it was the third highest opening weekend film in 97, the movie only had an overall score of 10% on Rotten Tomatoes that holds to this very day. Even though Batman and Robin didn’t do much right, we do have a lot to be grateful for. Without this wacky Bat-flick, the Dark Knight series might not have been what we know it to be today. This flick was way out in left field everyone is certain of that. I mean this movie did have bat-nipples; and Joel Schumacher has even personally apoligized for the train wreck of the movie.
“Look, I apologize. I want to apologize to every fan that was disappointed, because I think I owe them that.”
We really should be thanking this man. Now first off I will say this; the blame should not be put on just the director. Schumacher can only work with what he is given. In saying that I think there is many factors that led this movie too being the first batman movie without an Oscar nomination. Between the colours, ice puns, and cheesy gimmicks like the bat card it’s easy to see how it was overlooks. After Batman and Robin, plans for a fifth installment in the franchise were put at a halt from multiple factors. The next Batman Movies to be made would have been Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. This series was a complete 180 from Batman and Robin, because without the complete flop from this movie we would not have gotten the rebooted series. (I mean I’m sure we would in some way or another, because Batman = Money) However, the studio wanted to give the fans what they wanted; something that wasn’t out of this world and was a little more serious. This trilogy turned out to be one of the most popular franchise of my time, and one of the most well know. The Dark Knight became one of the highest rated films in the world. and we have the failure of Batman and Robin to thank for that.
So now looking back at this Batman film knowing that everything seemed wrong; but without it we might not have gotten what came after that was right. So Happy 20th Birthday Batman and Robin, thanks to you I got to witness some of the greatest Batman movies ever.
